I was inspired by the vision for post-World War II Europe by the great diplomat, Grigore Gafencu: “There is only one Europe! Even if its body is mutilated and quartered, the European ideal is inseparable. Europe cannot rise from the ashes in the West, if it dies in the East. There is no other place where the call for Europe is answered more strongly than in eastern European countries. The ideal of European unity is a pledge for peace and, therefore, freedom, for half a continent.” -- Antonio Tajani, Official launch of the Romanian Presidency, 10 January 2019

Look around and you will see that same diversity here today, in the form of your peers seated on all sides of you. When looking at them, take a moment to think what Europe was like before the European Union. Think of the thousands of young Europeans who lived then. They did not have the same opportunities as you do today. Their fate was not in their own hands, but in those of the despotic elites that plunged our continent into two world wars. Separated from one another by trenches and no-man’s land or oppressive walls, they were never masters of their own destiny. You represent a very different Europe. You are the children of a modern, democratic and open Europe. You are the Europe of trust and freedom. You have a world full of opportunities at your feet. -- Antonio Tajani, European Youth Event (EYE), 1 June 2018

As with the advent of steam, electricity or telecommunications, change as radical as (the digital revolution) calls for rules; without rules, the market may turn into a jungle in which the only law is the survival of the fittest (…) Until now, however, freedom has generally come before accountability. One reason lies in the dizzyingly fast pace at which digital applications develop. Another, however, can be found in the misguided ideology which regards all regulation as a brake on development. It is as if, at the beginning of the last century, a decision had been taken not to introduce a highway code, or traffic lights and fines for bad driving, in order not to slow down the emergence of the car as a form of transport. -- Antonio Tajani, Shaping our digital future: the challenge of the digital revolution, 25 April 2018

The history of her life is the history of our continent, the history of a continent torn apart, lost, which experienced the worst atrocities of which humanity is capable, but which, like her, found the strength to rise up again, to rebuild itself and to be reborn. -- Antonio Tajani, Formal European Parliament ceremony in honour of Simone Veil, 4 July 2017
